We want to set the snark aside for a moment to address the current humanitarian crisis in Haiti. If you’d like to give but are unsure how to make a donation, please consider the organizations below:
Charity Navigator: Do your research before donating to make sure your gift is going to a reputable organization that will use it the way you intended. CharityNavigator is a great source that aggregates charities and rates their use of donations. It also has great tips on avoiding scams. You can also find a list of resources from Google here.
Text Donations: Text donations are safe as long as you are giving to a reputable charity. The donation amount will simply be added to your phone bill. It’s an easy and simple way to give and here are some of the best ways to do so:
- Text “Haiti” to 20222 to donate $10 on behalf of The Clinton Foundation
- Text “YELE” to 501501 to Donate $5 to Yele Haiti’s Earthquake Relief efforts
- Text “Haiti” to 25383 to donate $5 on behalf of the Internal Rescue Committee.
- Text “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 on behalf of the Red Cross in the U.S.
The Children: UNICEF is a program from the United Nations focused on the well being of children. @AnnCurry’s heartbreaking tweet shows how vulnerable children are in this disaster.: “Rough day in Haiti. Watched children outside a damaged pediatrics hospital being treated without anesthetics.” Every dollar donated here will go DIRECTLY to children, not to administrative costs. Please consider a donation to UNICEF.
Volunteer: MatadorChange.com is working on organizing a relief trip to Haiti. If you have experience in disaster relief or medical training, consider donating your time. Organizations are still assessing the need and determining what kind of volunteers are needed, so please be patient.
Donating goods: Drives are taking place all of the world to collect supplies for those impacted by the earthquake. Think flat, lightweight, easily packable. One current drive is listed below, but a few internet searches can turn up drives closer to home:
