1st

It was a Friday. I was living in Colorado with my then girlfriend when I got a call from my sister who seemed agitated. She quietly informed me that she had just learned my mother had been diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer.
Not knowing a thing about it, I hoped that the 4th stage was on a 10-stage scale. Sadly, after we both researched it, we learned that it was the most severe stage - meaning the cancer had spread to other organs (in my mom's case - the liver.)
This was compounded when my Dad didn't call me all weekend to talk about it (they had been divorced for 5 years... but c'mon!)
Monday came. I was walking into my apartment with groceries when my sister called again.
"You'll never believe it, but Dad just had a heart attack. I don't know anything about it, but I'll let you know."
I started to book flights back East to visit them, but about an hour later, my Mom called. All she said was, "Is Jessie (my gf) with you?"
I didn't let her finish. I knew. (see more)
