I was a mere 30 minutes from Manhattan working in Northern New Jersey when I heard the news. Many of our staff had families that lived in NYC or worked in the World Trade Center.

Having just finished active duty service in June I worked with many former military officers and we were ready to be called up.

9-13 I was at Ground Zero helping dig out and search for potential survivors. NO PICTURE or words can equal the horror at the sight.

i was hosting an alternative rock morning radio show in birmingham, al...we were kind of edgy in those days...so, ironically enough, at 7:30am ct we opened up the phones with the topic "top 3 people who are going to hell"...about 15 minutes later there was a computer burp in our control room and seconds later our news team was running around the hallway like armageddon was hitting...as we turned on cnn, my sidekick, not yet undertanding the gravity of the situation, said, "i think in the end, they'll find this to be the handy work of terrorist hans gruber ("diehard" reference)...just then the 2nd plane hit the other tower...i actually said, "holy fucking shit, we're being attacked!" on live radio...fortunately, technology allowed us to dump that moment (7 second delay)...we went into emergency broadcasting mode and stayed on live with no commercial interruptions for 18 straight hours...i then went home and held my 2 month old daughter, audrey, all night long... (see more)

I was jet-lagged, having just returned from a 6 month tour of Europe - and was sleeping on my dad's couch in Northern VA (10 minutes from DC) when my Dad woke me up saying we were 'under attack'. I figured he meant ants or rodents of some kind, and that my day would be spent doing yard work...But he quickly dispelled that pastoral notion by turning on the t.v.

I started watching just as the second plane hit.

DC was insane. I watched the planes disappear from the sky (living between 2 airports - that'd never happened) and listened to false reports of car bombings at the State Dept and other panic.

Finally, I got all my friends together, bought a shitload of beer and stayed awake for 72 hours wondering if I should enlist... (see more)

I was standing in front of my TV taking a CD out of my stereo. It was Slayer's War Ensemble. I looked at the TV and the screen was full of the top of one of the buildings. I turned the sound up. The people were wondering what had happened. I told my mother before the second plane hit "I think were under some sort of attack. Planes don't fly close enough to crash there." I wish I had been wrong.  (see more)

On my way to the Jersey shore, drove by Philly International Airport and watch planes lined up in the air to land, watched flights from all military bases in the area all day, listened in disbelief to the radio...no one else was out on the bach that day....it was all very surreal... (see more)

I was in 11 th grade in lit. class when we heard the news the principal came over the intercom and asked for a moment of silence. We watched all day. My grandmother works at Airforce base, and they had red flags up no one can enter or leave they had bomb threats and it was just terrible lot of confusion, lots of tears, I was scared I didn't know what was going to happen yet. It was like a bomb blew up in my heart that day because i felt so bad for everything.  (see more)

I was in college, at home that morning, because of late classes. I was getting ready to leave. My Mom called and asked if I had heard from Leder that day.
I spent hours watching the television because classes were cancelled.
And I spent what seemed like hours trying to get in touch with Leder to make sure he was okay. He worked pretty darn close! (see more)
