the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, as part of a program of deliberate extermination planned and executed by Nazis in Germany led by Adolf Hitler. The worst mass murder in history through extermination camps. The Holocaust had a profound effect on society in both Europe and the rest of the world.  (see more)

re:  HOLOCAUST
The Holocaust is not an american Tragedy. Get that through your heads. It affected Europeans not American's directly. That's like saying what unfortunately happened in Haiti is an american tragedy.

Holocaust is a tragedie, i'm french and we always talk about it, but i'm not sure it should be there, i mean, the USA r the one that help us, freed france so i guess it should be in the heroism part!

Oh, also, this isn't an American tragedy. It's a world, or dare I say universal, tragedy.

re: Civil War
More Americans died but this war didn't have such disastrous/tragic, impacting effects as 9-11. I mean American being beheaded, Saddam Hussein captured/hung. Our soldiers are still deployed 7yrs later

re:  HOLOCAUST
America played a part in WW2 but we as American citizens didn't directly experience the horror of the holocaust. I'd say that's more a part of World History. That's why I didn't mention the holocaust.

re:  HOLOCAUST
I wouldn't necessarily call this a U.S. tragedy, but there's no doubt this tragedy transcends all boundaries and affected the whole world including the U.S. so you got my vote...
