competition: Why do guys say "Call you Later" when they won't?

At the end of a date, guys will usually say " I will call you later " when they really mean they won't and are looking for a quick exit. Why do they do that??? If the poor girl likes you, she's waiting by the phone for that call that's never gonna come!!! It's totally leading someone on!
